Huron Natural Area and Moose’s
When I spied a “Doga” event happening in nearby Huron Natural Area, I knew we HAD to go, and it was a chance to explore the surroundings. Here’s what we got up to.
Doggy yoga We started our day as every Sunday should: by joining a group of 5 other human-and-dog duos for a calming meander through a forest, followed by some yoga! This special event, run by Lili Romeo of Leader of the Pack and yoga teacher Carrie Bergen-Geisel, took place in a grassy area in Huron Natural Area. During the walk, Carrie encouraged us to take notice of our surroundings, and be mindful of our body and whether we held any tension which could be transferred onto our dogs. The aim was to be present in the moment, just like our pooches! We also took the opportunity to practise some “earthing” by each choosing a tree and placing our hand on it. Then we returned to our mats for Carrie to lead us through a yoga sequence, working with and around our dogs. For some of it, Rita lay and watched me, but there were points where she showed off her own Extended Puppy Pose or tried to sabotage my efforts. The whole group felt very chilled out afterwards.
Huron trails Rita and I hung about after the yoga for a faster-paced hike through Huron Natural Area. There are several well-marked trails ranging from 0.6km to 2km, but we amalgamated a few to follow a circuit of the whole area, with some additional loops. In total we walked 6km and experienced a range of scenery; swampland, a pond, forest, dirt tracks and paved paths. Facilities include a children’s play area, toilet block, and information boards throughout the trails (some aimed at the younger generation). We were lucky to get a parking spot; there were long lines of cars parked along Trillium Drive near the entrance.
Moose Winooski’s After all this activity, we were both very hungry! Rita had to sustain herself on portable dog treats for a while longer though….we were off to Moose Winooski’s! Offering authentic Canadian fare, Moose’s is very welcoming to dogs on the outdoor patio at both of its branches (we went to Kitchener, there is also one in Barrie). In fact, they used to provide dog beds, bowls and leash tie-ups, but the waitress informed me that this was no longer…perhaps they will bring them back if they get enough requests! The staff were all over Rita and gave her lots of cuddles. I was super happy they had a dedicated plant-based menu. I went for the Baja Chick’n Power Bowl. For dessert, I tried a Canadian classic: a Butter Tart. It was very sweet and I’m glad I ordered a cup of tea to help it along. But I definitely recommend, especially after a long day in nature!
