Peterborough, ON

Whilst staying at our AirBnB in Millbrook, we visited the nearby city of Peterborough.

One of the top experiences in Peterborough is the Canadian Canoe Museum (no dogs!) and this was evident throughout the city

Sights in the city Nina and I spent about an hour wandering around downtown.  First, we took a walk through Millennium Park, which served as an educational experience. We learned that the first Canadian to be awarded the Rose of Tralee was from Peterborough (in 1982) and admired the sculpture garden created in memoriam of local ice hockey player Steve Chiasson. The Silver Bean Café welcomes dogs on its patio during the summer. From the park, we walked part of the Trans-Canada trail along the Otonabee River. There were a handful of shops in downtown which interested us. Rita was more than welcome in Wild Rock Outfitters, where I bought a buff.

The shop window of Wild Rock Outfitters caught our eye

A must-see when visiting Peterborough is Lift Lock 21, the world’s largest hydraulic lift lock (a boat lift). We drove over to it and took some pictures. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see it in operation, but you can check out a time-lapse of it here.

Lunch We stopped for lunch in Gerti’s pub, where dogs are welcomed on the all-season heated, covered patio. The waitress even brought Rita some bacon from the kitchen! The food was yummy; Nina got a grilled cheese sandwich and I got the power bowl with tofu.

Butternut Holiday Trail I was pleasantly surprised by this part of the day. The Escape Maze provides both indoor and outdoor escape room games. I noticed they had a holiday trail, which I thought was just a Christmas walk through the farm, and it was dog-friendly so could be nice for Rita too. However, it was actually an outdoor escape room-type game and was super fun! We got a map to follow and at each station there was a puzzle to solve, giving us a number. At the end, you used your answers to deduce a padlock code and stop the timer. We almost got it right!! I would say this is something not to be missed if you are in the area. It’s a unique day out that you and your dog won’t forget!

Rita was indispensable in solving the puzzles
