St Catharines, ON

A not-so-lazy Sunday in St. Catharines.

Eat We arrived in St. Catharines at lunch-time, so headed straight for Lock St Brewery. They are extremely dog-friendly. Rita was allowed to sit inside, and they had no problem with her following me to the restroom! I tried their “Swimsuit” ale and hummus plate. It was delicious, but I think Rita’s choice won the best taste awards: a “barkuterie” board put together by Poochable. She gobbled it up quickly!

Shop A few doors down from the brewery is Endless Pawzabilties pet boutique. It was filled with stylish coats and accessories, lush-smelling dog-toiletries, handy pet gadgets and home-baked treats. They even had a section for cats. Rita was greeted with treats and I bought her a couple of Dough-Mutts to take home.

Walk Ball’s Falls Conservation Area doubled as a hike and a history lesson. The area, featuring two waterfalls, was once owned by the Ball family who developed a mill business with grist, saw and woollen mills in the 1800s. The brothers aimed to create a village, where their workers could own their own property. However, their plan was never realised, as the Great Western Railway bypassed the land. The area has since been sold to the conservation authorities and now features a mix of original buildings and reconstructions. We followed the Cataract Trail to visit the two impressive waterfalls, and wandered around the heritage village. The trails were pretty themselves; we did the Forest Frolic for a bit of extra walking.
